The Network of Sustainable Development Solutions (SDSN Youth) started its operations in May 2014 with the initiative of UNSDSN Australia / Pacific. The main purpose of this initiative pioneered by Australia is to increase the contribution of young people to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by unifying the youth of the world under the roof of SDSN. The Preparations for the official organization of SDSN Youth have been started as of October 2014 with the support of Columbia University, Institute of Earth Sciences Director. Jeffrey Sachs. The committee formed by the participation of representatives from other networks formed the infrastructure of the SDSN Youth initiative. In light of these developments, SDSN Youth became officially affiliated with UNSDSN in April 2015. Turkey, Italy, Australia, Brazil and Jamaica are part of SDSN Youth Network.
SDSN Youth Turkey was included in the youth network by the initiatives of Boğaziçi University Institute of Environmental Science Lecturer, Boğaziçi University for Sustainable Development and Clean Production UYGAR Center (BU-SDCPC) Director, UNSDSN Turkey Office Co-Chairman and Bogazici University Green Campus Coordinator Assoc. Dr. Nilgün Cılız. Through its interdisciplinary knowledge and experience, BU-SDCPC provides innovative technology transfer in close cooperation with relevant stakeholders and sustainable development for the global community.
SDSN Youth’s primary purpose is to provide a platform for groups who want to come together and work in this direction and to raise awareness with sustainability education.
UNSDSN’s strong bond with all the universities in the world and the importance given to education and students can be seen as an opportunity to involve students in Turkey and to create new activities for new project development. Considering the excess rate of young people in Turkey, this youth potential can be used to create initiatives to be a pioneer in the international arena about the field.
SDSN Youth Turkey's vision is to implement creative and entrepreneurial projects designated after 2015 under the leadership of UNSDSN. In addition to this, UNSDSN brings the projects under the same roof and share them with the wider masses. SDSN Youth has identified four priority targets jointly in all regions represented. These are;
- To educate young people about the Sustainable Development Goals and to create the necessary environment and encouragement for their implementation,
- To ensure that the views and concerns of young people are included in the Sustainable Development Goals,
- To contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals by sharing their ideas and experiences by bringing young people from different cultures and opinions together on a platform,
- Supporting young people for their projects and initiatives to solve the problems of sustainable development.
