Solar - Powered Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Developed Domestically at TOBB ETÜ
9 YEAR(S) AGOTAN100, the first domestic solar-powered unmanned aerial vehicle of Turkey, was developed with the contribution of the Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Laboratory of TOBB ETÜ. The project was launched and implemented under the lead of Associate Prof. Dr. Coşku Kasnakoğlu, a faculty member at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, who is the director of the Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Laboratory and the Control Systems Laboratory at the Technology Center of our University, and Prof. Dr. Ünver Kaynak, a faculty member at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, who is the coordinator of the TAN100 project, with the supports of TK Technical company and TÜBİTAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey) TAN100 is designed to meet the energy need for the vehicle by way of solar energy through the square-shaped high efficiency solar panels placed on the upper side of its aerofoil, which extends its endurance.
Being the first of its kind in Turkey, TAN100 unmanned aerial vehicle has been mentioned by Mr. Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu, the Chairman of TOBB and the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of TOBB ETÜ, during his speech delivered at the 71st General Assembly of TOBB to be one of the most important successes achieved by TOBB ETÜ.
The endeavors for the development, testing and auto-pilot control of numerous other unmanned aerial vehicles are currently carried out at the Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Laboratory of TOBB ETÜ. Research efforts for the development of aerial vehicles, which are capable of landing, taking off and flying fully autonomously, as well as the emergency systems, which will enable the recovery of the aerial vehicle in such cases as engine stoppage, loss of surface and similar incidents of damage, are also carried out at the laboratory. In that regards, TOBB ETÜ's Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Laboratory is the largest and the leading university laboratory in Turkey, where endeavors such as those mentioned above are maintained.
